The School of ICT had the honour of hosting the 2018 Annual Conference of the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT). The conference took place at the Boardwalk Hotel, Convention Center and Spa from 26 - 28 September 2018. On the 26th SAICSIT hosted a symposium for Masters and Doctoral students; with the main conference taking place on 27 - 28 September 2018.
The theme for SAICSIT 2018 was: Technology for Change. The motto of the Nelson Mandela University, “Change the World”, embodies the spirit of the great man with which the university proudly shares a name.  Research is in itself a search for answers that could lead to changing the way things are done or simply changing one’s understanding of a phenomenon. Researchers in the fields of computer science, information systems, information technology, software engineering and computer engineering are at the forefront of contributing to change in their environments; as academics, students or as leaders in their respective fields. Research envisions the technology at the forefront of change.

Over 80 delegates attended with Ms Ulandi Exner, from IITPSA, and Ms Moira de Roche, an independent consultant, as our keynote speakers. A special congratulations to the two Pioneer Award recipients, Dr Jackie Phahlamohlka and Prof Paula KotzĂ©.
Conference with a Conscience took the form of a charity cash auction which took place during the Conference Gala Dinner on 27 September 2018. A total of R5000 was raised by the auction, with all proceedings being donated to the Ithemba Lam Baby Home in Port Elizabeth.
