In today’s technology filled world, where topics like Internet of Things and Fourth Industrial revolution are the latest buzzwords, here in The School of Information Technology, these are words that inspire us. The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), or Industry 4.0(I4.0), is the driving force in many technological advances and it is affecting the way traditional business is done.

The role of the School of Information Technology is to, not only provide graduates who have the skills to become integrators and users of such technologies, but also to ensure that research supports the innovation and development needs that digital transformation is bringing. The School of IT also drives cross-disciplinary collaborations that are in line with the demands of Industry 4.0. Marine Engineering, Health Informatics and Manufacturing are examples of some of these areas. The government’s National Development Plan 2030 vision, of transforming the country into an inclusive and innovative digital and knowledge society allows the School of IT to prepare its graduates for the future that they will work and live in.

Our graduates become software developers, network engineers and enterprise support technicians; and some of their jobs are yet to be defined. The demand for IT skills and digital literacy has ensured that this school is at the frontier of digital training across all faculties and campuses of the Nelson Mandela University. Students who pursue a career in IT are welcomed into the School of Information Technology family and nurtured and guided through humanizing pedagogical approaches. Together with our students, graduates and staff, the School of IT plays an important role in the accelerated growth, technological transformation and the attainment of a well-developed ICT and digital economy.
