Congratulations to Lwando Ngcama on being selected for the Seeds of the Future trip to China last year.

Here's what he had to say about the prestigious opportunity that he was selected for.

1. How were you introduced to the programme (how did you find out about it)? - I found out about the program through an email that was sent here at school asking people who want to be part of the program to apply.

2. What was the selection process? - I don't know exactly what their selection process was but they said they wanted the "best of the best" and through that, we had to submit our CV and academic records. Also, there was a shortlisting process and that's when I got called to have an interview over the phone.

3. How did you feel when you found out you were selected? - I was very excited because I have never been outside of the eastern cape before and to make it more exciting, I was crossing the Indian ocean and going to China.

4. What stood out the most for you? - What stood out the most for me is the fact that we as South Africans still have a long way to go in terms of being a developed country. We as a country still have a lot to do to be as developed as China. This takes into account using technology more to better, simply put, our lives. In China, everyone has a smartphone and through that, they use it for almost everything which includes having to make payments. In China, it's only a few people who walk around carrying physical money because all the rest just pay through their phones.

5. Would you suggest that our students get involved in the programme and why? - Yes, our students should take part in this program because there is a lot to learn and being part of this program will expose them to a new way of thinking about improving their country in terms of infrastructure and mostly technology.

6. What have you learnt from the programme?- We learned more about Chinese culture and their past and present and also about their food and construction. In the last week, we visited the Huawei base and we were introduced to telecommunication technologies which included 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networking amongst other things. I would have to know a bit more about telecommunication in order to make any type of change. This is because what they taught us there was just an introduction into the field. Being there helped shape my thinking in terms of striving for better ways of living life through the use of technology. This type of exposure and thinking can first help bring society together and working together to help build a better South Africa.
